Modernization

Application Modernization

Big-bang rewrites are risky and slow to show value. We modernize step by step, putting tests and observability around what exists, then replacing parts in priority order so the system keeps running throughout.

Problems we solve

Sound familiar?

Incremental modernization of legacy applications: new platforms, architecture and user experience without stopping the business that depends on them.

  • A business-critical application runs on an unsupported framework, runtime or server.
  • Small changes take weeks because the codebase is fragile and poorly understood.
  • Hosting costs are high and deployments are manual and risky.
  • The user interface is outdated and slows staff and customers down.

Capabilities

What our modernization work covers

  • Codebase assessment

Architecture review, dependency audit, risk map and a prioritised modernization roadmap.

  • .NET Framework to modern .NET

Incremental migration of libraries, services and web apps to supported .NET releases.

  • Strangler-fig re-architecture

New services and interfaces introduced alongside the legacy system, replacing functionality piece by piece.

  • Cloud migration

Re-hosting or re-platforming to managed cloud services with infrastructure as code.

  • Database modernization

Schema clean-up, data migration and performance improvements with verified data integrity.

  • UX modernization

Rebuilding key user journeys with an accessible, modern interface on top of stable APIs.

Typical stack

  • .NET
  • ASP.NET Core
  • SQL Server
  • PostgreSQL
  • Azure
  • AWS
  • Docker
  • Terraform
  • React

Delivery process

How the engagement runs

  1. 01

    Assess

Understand the current system, its risks and the business priorities that depend on it.

  2. 02

    Stabilise

Add tests, monitoring and automated deployments around the existing system.

  3. 03

    Plan the path

Choose the migration strategy per component: retain, re-host, re-platform or rebuild.

  4. 04

    Migrate incrementally

Deliver modernized parts in small, reversible releases.

  5. 05

    Decommission

Retire legacy components once replacements are proven in production.

Use cases

Where this service fits

  • Unsupported platforms

Applications on end-of-life frameworks, runtimes or operating systems.

  • Monolith decomposition

Separating high-change areas of a large application so teams can move faster.

  • On-premises to cloud

Moving workloads to the cloud with improved reliability and deployment automation.

FAQ

Modernization questions

Do we need to rewrite our application from scratch?

Rarely. A full rewrite delays value and carries high risk. An incremental approach, stabilising first and then replacing components in priority order, usually delivers improvements sooner and keeps the business running.

Will users experience downtime during modernization?

The goal is to avoid it. We plan releases to be small and reversible, run old and new components side by side where needed, and schedule any unavoidable cut-overs with you in advance.
